Win Your Portrait Session – 2011 Winners | Adelaide Family Photographer

I’m sure it’s no news to anyone, but I’m not really the best at keeping my blog up to date. The problem is that blogging takes quite some time – most times I have to dedicate a whole night to one blog post and because I work after hours when the kids are asleep, that means that blogging has to be a low priority because my main priority has to be completing galleries and making sure my clients receive their photographs first and foremost.

But, as I said, there are so many beautiful families to share with you all and so I have a few catch up blog posts in store over the next few weeks. One of the most important blog posts though, is this one! You may remember reading here (from last year) about giving away a Christmas present of a Portrait Session to one family who might otherwise not have been able to, for whatever reason, have some family photographs taken.

I received the most heartfelt, beautiful nominations. My Mum, Dad and I all read through the nominations and found it so incredibly hard to decide who to choose, and I have to say I’m not sure I’d like to do that again, because honestly? It was TOO hard. How do you choose from so many families who deserved to win the prize? I really struggled with it.

Finally, we came to a decision, and I’d like to share a little bit about the lovely family who won the prize of a Portrait Session – a Christmas present from me and my family last year, to their family.

Felicity and Matt have three beautiful daughters. Matt is a school chaplain at their local high school, and youth pastor at their local Baptist Church. They spend countless hours volunteering and serving their community.

Felicity has been actively involved in the local playgroup for a long time. She spends many hours caring and assisting others, and some of the beautiful things she does for others include organising a two week meal roster for ALL Mums who have a new baby within the playgroup; sets up and packs up playgroup each week, and bakes yummy treats for the parents to enjoy while they are there; cooks meals for others in the community, especially at times of hardship i.e when a family is grieving the loss of a loved one, or even if they just have a cold! In general, Felicity is just a phone call away…a wonderful friend, and very caring person.

Somehow, Felicity manages to do all of this while her family goes through it’s own hard times. In 2006, Matt began having seizures and was diagnosed with a brain tumour. This was an extremely difficult time for them emotionally, physically, mentally and financially. She was a pillar of strength to Matt, continually amazing others with her strength in such a difficult situation. After surgery and treatment he went into remission, however in 2009, their worst nightmare resurfaced when another brain tumour was found. Now with two young children and another on the way, Felicity made the daily journey into hospital to be there for Matt, while being “mum” and “dad” for the children. Just before this competition was announced, Matt had his routinely six month scan, where they found another brain tumour. With his specialists onboard, they began planning their next form of attack…but on top of that, at the time Felicity’s Mum was very ill as well.

When I photographed the family together before Christmas, it was a Thursday, and Matt was having surgery on the following Tuesday. We went fishing, we laughed, we blew bubbles, we smiled, and most of all, we captured this beautiful family together. I am beyond thrilled that Matt’s surgery went well…but it is a precious reminder that we should hold our families tight and make the most of the wonderful time we are able to spend with them.

Thank you Matt, Felicity, Naomi, Emma and Lucy, for allowing me to photograph the love you share for one another! Christmas has long been and gone (and although my blog is late, I promise they received their prints etc before Christmas!), and I do hope that it was a wonderful time together with your family over the Festive Season. Much love to you all xxxx

Without further ado, please meet the beautiful winners of the Win Your Portrait Session for 2011!!

Samantha + Maclean | Award Winning Adelaide Wedding Photographer

I met with Sam and Mac a few months before their wedding, and loved them from the get go. They were so CUTE! Not to mention, Sam was just gorgeous and always made me smile with her emails here and there – either about the wedding (with sneak peeks of various wedding details…I really LOVE sneak peeks!), or about other blog posts I’d posted, and she always managed to put a smile on my face. I was so excited about their wedding day.

The week of their wedding rolled around, and all of a sudden the forecast was starting to look a little grim. I usually have at least one extreme weather wedding each season, and theirs was definitely it! It hit 40 degrees that day, and we felt every. single. degree of it. It was ghastly!!

But, you know what? Not one of the bridal party complained. Not one of them wilted in the heat. Not one of them showed any sign of anything other than absolute awesomeness and working with all of them was a blast.

The entire wedding was held at Partridge House in Glenelg, with the ceremony taking place under the shade of some beautiful trees in the garden. After the bridal party shots, we quickly popped over to the beach for a few photographs, before heading back to the garden to catch the evening light and then head on in for the reception.

The flowers were by Fabulous Functions and as always, they were FABULOUS!

Sam and Mac, thank you so much for entrusting me with your wedding day. You are one of the sweetest, loveliest couples you’ll ever come across and I thoroughly enjoyed your wedding day. Thank you xx

Jenna | Adelaide Newborn Photographer

Today’s blog is full of newborn beauty, a tiny little cherub at just nine days new.

Just quickly though, let’s rewind the clock back twelve years, to the first day of a new job I was starting. I walked into the office (hello to the Showground folks!), and a very friendly and welcoming face came to see how I was going and somehow helped to make me feel at home right away. That person was my lovely friend, Ali. We hit it off immediately and have been very close ever since. She’s one of my dearest friends.

There’s so much that we’ve been through together. I was by her side as her bridesmaid when she married her sweetheart, Darryl. She has loved my children (she didn’t even get mad when one of them smooshed chocolate cake onto her nice, clean white wall!). She is my Bush Biscuit, my Bushy, my Ali (and I’m hers!). And now I am very lucky, because she’s given us all another little person to love in this world (and love her I do).

I’ll never forget the moment she told me she was pregnant. She was going to be a Mummy, and Darryl was going to be a Daddy!! Hurrah!!

But my poor Ali…she was so ill through her pregnancy. Sadly, pregnancy is not a fun and glowing experience for her – morning sickness did not sweetly disappear after the first trimester. No, it hung around until the day that her baby was born, and she was so sick that the baby shower we were planning for her even had to be cancelled, the poor thing!

The thing is, I don’t think Ali minds now. You see, on a lovely summers day earlier this year, little Jenna entered the world. Beautiful, sweet little Jenna – just 6lb 7oz with an amazing head of hair and the sweetest little lips you ever did see. Pure joy, in the form of a little baby girl.

Bushy and Daryl, congratulations on the birth of your darling girl. I’m so glad to be able to watch her grow. Lots of love xxxxxx

Jenna Violet, I love you very much xxxxxx

I don’t usually share so much without sharing more colour images, but her entire session blew me away in black and white. I hope you love them as much as I do!

Jenna was breech in her Mummy’s tummy, so she was so super comfortable with her feet around her ears!

Jodie + Dave | Adelaide Wedding Photographer

I have to confess, I love a good surprise. I love when something really, really awesome happens and I’ve no clue it’s been in the pipelines. I love the feeling of exhilaration at discovering something so amazing has happened (or is about to) – it’s the coolest thing.

But even more so, I love being IN on a surprise. I love knowing that I’m a part of giving people that exhilarating feeling. I love planning surprises and then being able to see people’s faces light up with sheer delight. Surprises are so awesome.

So, when I received an email enquiring about the possibility of photographing a birthday party – which was actually going to be a surprise wedding – my answer was YES in a heartbeat! Enter Jodie and Dave, who I knew would be gorgeous even just from the emails and conversations I had with Jodie leading up to the day. The week of the wedding we managed to sneak in a quick visit and not only were they gorgeous on the inside, but thoroughly gorgeous on the outside too! Oh, how excited I was about their special day.

Their celebrant, Megan Cree, is without a doubt one of my favourite people within the wedding industry. We worked together on a wedding a while ago and she is an absolute superstar, so I was thrilled to find out that she would be involved (and in on the surprise too!). When I arrived at the party location (a gorgeous holiday house at Grange Beach), I found Megan and we secretly pottered about amongst the guests, who were none the wiser that we were actually there with a specific job to do!

At the pre-arranged time, Jodie and her Mum, Dad, Megan and I retreated to one of the bedrooms, where Jodie changed into an absolutely stunning gown. We awaited the signal that the interstate guests had arrived, and let me tell you, the anticipation in that room was at fever pitch – I had the most insane case of butterflies as we waited for our cue to leave the room!

Finally, Jodie was able to make her grand entrance, and arm in arm with her Father wandered casually down the stairs to her “birthday party guests”. The shrieks of surprise were priceless, and the faces on their guests were of pure happiness. It was quite possibly the best surprise I’ve ever been a part of.

One of the things I loved so much about Jodie and Dave’s wedding ceremony was not just their heartfelt and beautiful vows to one another, but the fact that throughout their ceremony they were arm in arm, holding each other tight for pretty much the entire time. Apart from when they were exchanging rings, they simply held each other. It was beautiful.

We had a quick (and very windy!) trip down to the water’s edge for some photographs of the bride and groom, and then I left the new Mr and Mrs to party on into the night with their family and friends.

Jodie and Dave, thank you so much for entrusting me with your awesome secret, and for allowing me to document your wedding day for you. It was such a pleasure to meet and work with you both, and I had so much fun with you all xx

The secret Bride-to-be, who was ever so cool, calm and collected!

Down to the beach…

Thomas | Adelaide Newborn Photographer

I really do think that a first pregnancy is so different to a second, third, fourth etc. Every pregnancy is magical and amazing (whether it’s your first or your sixth!), but there is something so unique about becoming first time parents. Your world is about to change – you’re no longer a ‘couple’ as such (instead, you’re a family); everything that lies ahead of you is a mystery and the path in which you’re about to travel is completely new and exciting. It’s the hugest change in life, but it’s an amazing change at that.

It was such a huge blast from the past when I met with Natasha and David to take some pregnancy portraits. You see, when they stepped out of their car for their pregnancy shoot, David was none other than one of the fellows I went to school with!!

We met when Natasha was 36 weeks pregnant, and I think she looked beautiful. I could have sworn she was less than 36 weeks – she carried her baby so neatly, she was just gorgeous.

Now, I really love meeting with couples in the last few weeks of a pregnancy, to photograph the glorious bump that carries their soon-to-be-born child…but even more so, I love to then go and meet that little person once they are earthside, and see the beautiful family with babe in arms.

I was so pleased when I received the news a few weeks later that their bump was now a beautiful little baby boy, named Thomas. I couldn’t wait to meet him!

Little Thomas decided that the day of my visit would be the perfect opportunity to *ahem* clear his bowels. I know that his Mummy and Daddy will understand when I say it was the most hilarious session because of it – I think every single blanket I had taken with me had a souvenir from Thomas by the time I left to go home! But as they say, it’s better out than in, and once he felt a little better he fell into the deepest slumber.

He was a perfect angel for us as we photographed him that afternoon. I feel like the luckiest person alive to be able to love what I do, this much. I also think I’m pretty lucky to get work with the lovely people – friends – that I do…Natasha, David and Thomas are no exception, and I can’t wait to catch up with them again soon.

I also have to make note of the ultra cute “sibling shot” that we managed to capture at Thomas’ newborn session. Scroll down to view a selection of images from his gallery, including one with his fur-brother, Saxon. When I visit next, I might just slip Saxon in my car and take him home…

Without further ado, meet Thomas.

Isn’t he divine?

Those lips…oh, those lips!
